ABOUT

In 1989, in the face of a dwindling supply of high quality aggregate and a rising cost of oil, Skip Stothert realized that recycling roads was not only becoming more economical, it was becoming an environmental necessity. So he acquired RW Blacktop Ltd., now called Green Roads Recycling® Ltd., a hot-in-place asphalt recycling company.

In the 30 years that followed, this family-owned and operated company successfully recycled over 4500 kilometers of road. In fact, if you’ve driven anywhere in British Columbia, Canada, you’ve probably driven on a Green Roads Recycling® recycled road at some point.

WHY ROAD RECYLCLING?

Hot-in-place asphalt recycling

You don’t have to be an economist to understand that the cheapest energy -whether it’s gas to heat your home, oil to fuel your car or electricity to power your business- is the energy that we do not use. For consumers of all shapes and sizes, resource conservation is simply good, responsible business. As the world edges closer towards a global population of 9 billion, employing resources more efficiently at every level of society and every level of industry only becomes more important.

RECYCLING

By 2020, Green Roads Recycling will have recycled over 4,500 kms of provincial highway, conserving 720,000 barrels of oil, 2,056,500 tonnes of aggregate and 121,500 tonnes of ghgs. Unlike other recycling programs, HIPAR saves taxpayers millions rather than costing millions.

BC’s Ministry of Transportion and Infrastructure’s forward-thinking has turned what most would deem as a depreciating asset into an appreciating one. The residual value of the materials in roads will continue to increase exponentially over time. As the rest of the world struggles to catch up, and continues to waste or down-cycle their non-renewable resources, future British Columbians will be proud of our province.

Road recycling saves:

  • 160 barrels of oil per km
  • 100% of material
  • up to 50% of GHG emissions
  • Up to $40k per km
